MGM Preparing Rocky Collection on Blu-ray

Postby Marty McFly » Mon May 18, 2009 4:13 pm

Eric Doctorow, General Manager of MGM Worldwide, revealed in an interview for Home Media Magazine that the studio is currently preparing “the entire Rocky collection” for Blu-ray in time for the holidays. So far only the first and the last Rocky films ('Rocky' and 'Rocky Balboa') have been released on Blu-ray.

Doctorow also mentioned that the studio will release other “cool releases,” such as a 40th anniversary edition of 'Hair,' and a 30th anniversary edition of 'Mad Max,' and “a couple of 'Stargate' surprises.” Hopefully all those releases will street on Blu-ray as well as DVD.

The MGM exec also said he was “very confident” that Blu-ray would triumph, and he stated, “Blu-ray is a wonderful format and plays right into our culture's obsession with quality and all things high def.”

I think that this Christmas is going be a MASSIVE couple of months for BD. It seems like a lot of studios are starting to ramp up there "big boy" titles and are releasing boxsets and what have you.

I estimate about two years or so before we start seeing lots of catalogue TV titles released on the format in ultimate collectors sets etc.

Wow now that is punchlingly brilliant artwork. I wonder if this will be released in the UK with that artwork or will it be for the US only. If its US only then it will most likely be region locked.

In an early announcement to retailers, it has been revealed that MGM Home Entertainment is set to release the Blu-ray compilation 'Rocky: The Undisputed Collection', which includes all six 'Rocky' movies, on November 3. At the moment, there are no official release details, other than it will be a seven-disc set.

Up to now, the only titles from the franchise available on Blu-ray were the first and last, 'Rocky' (released by MGM) and 'Rocky Balboa' (released by Sony).

The collection is also coming to the UK, where it will street on October 25.

Amazon UK has included the special features list in its product page. Reportedly, this release will contain over 3½ of special features, including:
All New Trivia Game, “Feeling Strong Now” exclusive to Blu-ray
Making-of documentary
Featurettes:
Steadicam: Then and Now With Garrett Brown
The Ring of Truth
Behind the Scenes with John Avildsen
Three Rounds With Legendary Trainer Lou Douva
Video Commentary with Sylvester Stallone

Cool. At least they're not barebones.

I'm definitely in for this. Love all the Rocky movies except for V. Balboa was awesome.

Cool. I like both about the same though.

I wonder if one image will be the front of the box and the other the back?

So the Rocky sequels STILL have no special features and it's sounding like MGM are just going to stick in the currently available Rocky BD into the set instead of striking a new HD master.

Might give this one a miss after all. :¬

sounds like this was a quickly made set instead of putting in some hardwork.

Saw this set in the "flesh" this evening. Looks amazing. It's a fold out jobby, nice shiny cover. I've not pre-ordered it but I know someone who has pre-ordered it for me. Should make a nice Christmas present. 8)

This is one of my favourite BD boxsets. I used to find the old DVD boxset to be damn near unwatchable, so it's great to have the Rocky series in HD and finely be able to enjoy them. It's well worth the cash if you're a fan. :^
