Shadow of a Doubt is a classic Hollywood movie. Joseph Cotten is excellent as Uncle Charlie, if you enjoyed his performance then I heartily recommend Citizen Kane (ESSENTIAL viewing) where he co-stars with Orson Welles (both actor and director). Interestingly Shadow of a Doubt was Hitchcock's personal favourite out of all the films that he directed.

Yeah, he said that it was the idea of bringing menace into a small town that made this one of his favourite pieces. I believe 'The Wrong Man' has a similar structure to 'Shadow of a Doubt'? I've watched all of the Special Features on the discs as well, they are so interesting and informative!

I feel that Citizen Kane is one that is in need of urgent viewing from myself, unfortunately I don't own it but I will put it on my must-see list! Thanks for the recommendation. :thumbwink:

A lot of Hitchcock's work repeats themes and ideas, that's part of what makes him an auteur. As for The Wrong Man and Shadow of a Doubt comparison, I've never comprehended it before. I suppose there may be similarities between the two, but there are far more interesting compairisons to be made between The Wrong Man and a lot of Hitchcock's other films. In fact I've wrote an essay on the subject of Hitchcock as auteur at University which I could post if it would help you at all. :)

BTW, Citizen Kane can currently be had for a bargainess (real word) amount on Amazon right now: Citizen Kane [DVD] [1942]

I think people expected a wacky Jim Carrey movie in a similiar vain to Liar, Liar and The Mask, instead they got a black comedy. I loved it though, in fact it's probably my favourite Jim Carrey movie (perhaps tied with The Truman Show).

DVD: Rear Window (1954) ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

I have seen this one before and I recalled it being one of my favourite Hitchcock's amongst the bunch that I had seen and it still holds up in a very strong place. I think that the whole movie is so intriguing, you're put in the exact same position as the lead character - you see what he sees, you feel what he feels, you put the pieces together the same time that he does. It has a perfect structure and fantastic leads with James Stewart and Grace Kelly lighting up the screen.

A Hitchcock classic! :^ :^

Superb season of a classic show. I'll never grow tired of Star Trek.

BD: Edge of Darkness (2010) ~ ~ ~

A stylish conspiracy thriller from the director of Casino Royale, Edge of Darkness marks the return of Mel Gibson in an acting role after an eight year absence.

Gibson is superb as a Boston police detective Thomas Craven, reminding us what a talent he is. Gibson is supported by an equally engaging Ray Winstone, however both are unfortunately let down by an overly predictable plot.

Even though it's not quite the 'Taken with Mel Gibson' flick that the marketing promised it is still worth checking out for Gibson, Winstone and some nice direction by Martin Campbell.

BD: Yes Man (2008) ~ ~ :1/2:

The premise of Yes Man is interesting and seems like the perfect vehicle for Jim Carrey, yet it never manages to exploit the idea to its full potential, which results in an average Jim Carrey movie that feels like a retread of some of his earlier and funnier films.

Carrey's performance walks the line between his 'zany' mode (The Mask, Liar Liar, Ace Ventura) and his 'serious' mode (The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine) which ends up clipping the comedic performance that he his well capable of.

Zooey Deschanel gives a sweet performance as Carrey's girlfriend but it is Rhys Darby (playing Carrey's 'boss') who steals the show every time he is on screen, I would've liked to have seen far more of his character as I thought he was hilarious.

In short, a neat idea that falls a little flat in execution. Not a bad Carrey movie, just an average one that could have been better.

BD: Law Abiding Citizen (2009) ~ ~ ~ ~

I was surprised by how enjoyable this was. It is an interesting take on the whole Taken/Edge of Darkness modern day revenge movie with hints of Silence of the Lambs and Se7en.

Law Abiding Citizen does stretch the boundary of believability to extreme lengths but then it's an action flick with aspirations not a court room drama.

Brother Bear has a great storyline running through the film about how man becomes Bear. There is some great scenes that really play on your sensative side. Phil Collins sang some truely great songs for this film.

BD: Public Enemies (2009) ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Public Enemies was a fantastic portrayal of the War on crime in the 30's. Johnny Depp portrayed John Dillinger so perfectly it was like seeing the gangster himself on screen, John Dillinger was famous for having a lopsided grin and Johnny Depp made sure that his facial expressions stood out. The casting of Christian Bale was really good, he played Melvin Purvis greatly.
